I want to talk about the “Types of Witches” for a moment.
I see a lot of posts here and in other groups asking “what kind of a witch am I?” and usually nothing more. Almost as common is “how can I find out what kind of a witch I am?”
Let me state this clearly: There is absolutely NO reason to determine this within the first 5 years of your practice. Before then, you are searching, learning, perfecting skills, and if you try to force yourself into a type before then, you limit yourself.
I’m a HedgeWalker, DragonWitch, KitsuneWitch. I work with Dragons and Kitsune in my magickal work, and it has taken me years to build a relationship with them. But as part of that, I also know how to grow herbs, do KitchenWitch or HearthWitch work, I can make potions, candles, jewelry, leatherwork. I can do guided meditations, I can do Tarot and Rune readings. I’ve taught all these subjects to others in the past. I know of theories with the Pyramids, Stonehenge, Easter Island, the Celts, Shinto, and many many more skills. This is over nearly 30 years of active practice, and a very WIDE range of reading when I was 4-23 or so thanks to my grandmother.
When I say “study with my grandmother” I learned about many new age theories and philosophers (Monroe, Bailey, Blavatsky Casey, others) and worked to understand those thought they presented. But I didn’t try to type myself as a “NewAge Witch” even though I could.
The reason is simple, there’s too much out there for me to mentally say to myself “this knowledge has nothing to offer me in the greater sphere of things.” If you push yourself into a type of witch, you will unconsciously cut yourself from things that can help you now.
For instance, many of the things that Edgar Casey offered up has helped me in my work. Learning from Native American thought, I came to understand the sacredness of the Earth and how everything is connected. Understanding thoughts of Chinese philosophers I came to understand how Dragons function now and Ley Lines. Because of my studies in Green Witchcraft and gardening, I came to understand what can be substituted for what in other work.
Don’t try to pick up what kind of witch you are until you feel knowledgeable enough to specialize in one or two skillsets, like how Swamps help the environment, how Animals fit into the scheme of things, the pull of the Moon and Sun and Stars on your soul. THAT is when you can say “I’m a Celestial Witch”. It is what you feel pulled closest to and what you feel comfortable working inside that will determine what “kind” of witch you will be.
But without sampling and learning from ALL versions of witchcraft, and many disciplines from your life, you may miss your calling. I NEVER would have thought of working with the Kitsune, and I would have stayed a Cat Otherkin if it weren’t for my work with the Dragons, and I would never have gotten to the Dragons without learning other skills, and I wouldn’t have understood the connection between HedgeWalking, Shamanism, Indigenous Medicine practices. I would not have been able to teach the methods of Meditation if I hadn’t studied Karate.
DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF YET. There is a TON of information out there to find and study. Stop trying to skip steps A, B, C, D, E, and F where you learn the foundation to get to step L because it’s “cool”.
After all, if you hadn’t learned your alphabet, then learned how to read, you wouldn’t have gotten this far in your metaphysical and witchcraft studies.
