Okay, now that I got the configuration stuff out of the way, let me put up a REAL post.
As you know I study things. I was a Mormon a long time ago, and during that time I studied the Bible. There is a class that is manditory for all High School children called “Early Morning Seminary” in which young High School students (from Ninth grade through Twelth Grade) go and study the various Mormon holy texts. Among these are the Bible (Joseph Smith Translation), the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price and other important Church texts.
The Bible is broken up into two parts, the New Testament one year and the Old Testament another year. The only class I liked was the Old Testament cycle, mainly because I really really liked the teacher of that uint and her son.
But I’ve never actually READ the Bible all the way through.
I’ve listened to the people when they have an opinion on the Bible, I’ve listened to the interpertations of the texts, I’ve listened when a bible scholar has said something. And while I may look at what they say and read the referencing chapters to make sure I understand a
quote in the context it was meant to be read in, I’ve not read the whole thing.
I intend to change that now.
Please note, this does NOT mean I’m converting. Far from it, I intend to be very critical in my reading while I am doing so. I’m not taking anyone’s word for what it says, and in fact I’m going to be reading this with a slew of clergy and free thinkers at a Yahoo Group called LectioDivinia ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lectiodivina/ ). One among those who are going to be studying it with me is Carl McColman, the gentleman that is referenced in this blog multiple times. He’s not looking to convert anyone, but rather to gain an understanding of what the Bible says in a mythic/mystic sense.
Me, I’m doing it for the information. It’s a good thing to know the mythologies of other religions. If there was a hindu group doing study of their mythology, I’d be taking that too.
So don’t start bailing on me yet.
One point of concern is that Mary and Rhiannon are going to be doing this as well. I’m not worried about Mary, but Rhiannon is at that point where she can be REALLY influenced by other paths. If she fells a true calling to God, that’s fine. But if she’s doing this to gain approval from me, then I don’t want her doing it. Mary says she’s going to do this so that there is a point of commonality between us. Don’t know if that is what I want.
I want to do this so that I can understand where most of the animosity comes from. That and to understand the mythology, to understand the Pauline letters and the basic makeup of the Christian church. They seem to set a hell of a lot of their make up in the Bible, so I want to understand that.
Heck, I’m the token pagan on the list, so I probably won’t be doing that much commenting.
But join if you want. We can go be heretics together.
