Home The Tree Ceremony of Parting

Ceremony of Parting

(Note from Daven: Again, note, this is my own creation. It seemed appropriate to have some kind of parting ceremony for those who are leaving the Coven.)

Ceremony of Parting

This is a ceremony for use when a Gesith is departing from the Coven for any reason. Hopefully there will not be any hard feelings or ill will toward or from the person departing. If there are, I would advise that the parties sit down with a neutral third party and work their differences out.

[Thegn sounds the Horn or the Priest rings a bell. Priest and Priestess kiss. Covener steps forward.]

Covener: There is one of our number who wishes to depart from us.

Priest: Then let him/her come forth.

[Departing Covener steps forward with a Second. The Second is someone chosen beforehand by the DC {Departing Covener} to act as a helper. If wished, the Second can say the previous Covener’s part.]

Priestess: Do you wish to depart for this, your home, and us, your family?

DC: I do. (Or “I do not, but I must”)

Priest: Then you must leave us as you entered, naked and unadorned.

[DC removes their clothing and any jewelry and hands it all to the Second. Skyclad they stand before the Altar.]

DC: As I came into this family, so now do I leave it. While this saddens me, my time has come to begin again somewhere else.

Priest: Do you do this of your own will?

DC: I do.

Priestess: While partings are times of sorrow, you are always welcome here, even as a child is always welcome in the home of the parents.

Priest: May the Lord Herne and the Lady Rhiannon always be with you. What you have learned with us, apply in your life. Grow in knowledge and share it with those who find you.

Priestess: Know always that you are loved and wanted by your family here. That you may bring others into this family gladdens us all. And your path may lead you back to us eventually.

Priest: Even though you leave, remember well your Oaths. You have sworn to be true to Herne and Rhiannon. You have sworn to respect the privacy of you fellows in the Circle. You have sworn to honor the Lord and Lady in the celebrations held in Their honor. Lastly, you have sworn to help your Brothers and Sisters in the Craft when needed. Remember and Honor these Oaths.

Second: Know also that you are the chosen representative of Herne and Rhiannon.

Priestess: Know that as a Priest/ess of the Gods, you are an example to all that you meet. Always strive to be a good one.

Priest: Love is the Law and Love is the Bond.

All: Love is the Law and Love is the Bond.

[Blessings from the Priest and Priestess in their aspects as the Lord and Lady. Any gifts form the Coven and anything to be given by the DC should also be given at this time.

Regardless of anything else, Priest/ess should present the DC with a Sword.]

Priest/ess: Take this Sword in remembrance of all that you have learned here. Use it in your Circles, either your own private ones or those with your new Coven, and know we Love you.

[DC gets dressed again while the Second holds the new gifts. If the DC wishes to say anything to the Coven, it should be now. When the DC is finished speaking, anyone else who wishes to speak may do so.

Next is Cakes and Ale followed by games and merriment.]

Stars light your path.
