HomeThe Tree Call to Quarters

Call to Quarters

(Note from Daven: Please note, this is not a ceremony in Seax-Wica. I wrote this because there are times when one wishes for a bit more protection than just a Circle. This is my own creation. Use it at your own risk.)

Call to Quarters

This rite should be performed before the working of any Magick. This is a protective rite. Be aware that by casting this, you are inviting some non-embodied spirits to protect the Circle from outside influences. Do not command the spirits to come, ask and invite them to be present.

[After Cakes and Ale, when all present have spoken sufficiently on the subject of the Work, the Priest and Priestess kiss.]

Priest: Now is the time to Call the Quarters.

[Covener chosen moves to the Altar and takes up the Sword and some lit incense. She moves to the North and holds the Sword aloft.]

Covener: I call to the North. We ask for Michael, Guardian, and Protector, who has power over the Air to be with us this night. Watch us and guard us as we do this Work.

[She lowers the Sword and places the incense near the Northern Candle. She then goes to the Altar and takes up a chalice of plain water. She moves to the East and Salutes.]

Covener: I call to the East. We ask for Gabriel, Herald, who has power over the Water to be with us this night. Watch us and guard us as we do this Work.

[She lowers the Sword and places the water near the Eastern Candle. She then goes to the Altar and takes up a bowl of salt. She moves to the South and Salutes.]

Covener: I call to the South. We ask for Raphael, Lord of the South, who has power over the Earth to be with us this night. Watch us and guard us as we do this Work.

[She lowers the Sword and places the salt near the Southern Candle. She then goes to the Altar and takes up a lamp or candle and lights it off the Altar Candle. She moves to the West and Salutes.]

Covener: I call to the West. We ask for Uriel, Lord of Death and the West, who has power over Fire to be with us this night. Watch us and guard us as we do this Work.

[Lowers Sword and places the Salt near the Western Candle. She then moves deosil around the Circle, re-inscribing it with the Sword. When she gets back to the North, she moves to the Altar, raises the Sword high and says:]

Covener: By the four powers invited here, by the elements of Air, Earth, Fire and Water, by the North South, East and West, I declare this Circle cast. May it contain the Power raised here and protect us from what we do not wish here. Let none leave it until we are done.

All: So be it!

[She replaces the Sword on the Altar and resumes her place until the Clearing of the Temple.]

I highly recommend that this rite be performed before any Magickal work. If desired, different Covener may speak the different parts. In that case, each Covener replaces the Sword on the Altar before the next element is called.

It is important to not compel anyone to be present. The whole point of this is to freely be given protection. It is hard to do that when you are forced to be present. Offer the invitation to each of the powers and do not be upset if someone does not show up.

In the Clearing of the Temple, thanks are given to each of the powers in turn. If someone wishes to thank them again, that is good.

Stars light your path.
